3D for everyone

Senior Designer & Design Lead (2016 - 2018)

3D for Everyone (3DFE) started from a single idea and grew into a roughly 250-person organization with the goal of enabling everyone to create, share, and consume 3D objects.

How can we make using 3D content as easy as 2D content is today.

We created specific 3D experiences with Scan 3D, Paint 3D, 3D Viewer, Remix3D.com and collaborated with partner teams to include 3D support in Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint), OneDrive, Photos, and File Explorer.

I was part of the early research and pitch process and then joined the Scan 3D team working on interactions and strategy. I was then asked to support our announce and then lead our 3D viewer experience. Lastly, I was asked to support our organizations Creative Director and moved to a central design role focused on org wide strategy, goal development and alignment, and storytelling.

My first set of work was helping define the vision for the experience through a vision video.

  • Gathered research, scoped the project, and worked with leadership to align on goals and principles

  • Wrote the video brief, created a work back schedule and wrote the narrative for the video

  • Partnered with an external video production team in Seattle “Strange & Wonderful” to film the video

  • Wrote the script and oversaw the video shoot including directing all technical shots

  • Guided the post production and internal reviews to reach a high quality and well received video that help the program receive another round of internal funding

The video was always meant to be internal only and was never released.

After the vision video I worked on various features mainly focusing on multi object interactions on a mobile device. This included best practices for manipulating objects in 3D on a 2D screen. This was done with a full creative process of research, ideation, prototypes and user testing. The design was put into the production plan but after a short time I was asked to join a strike team for our programs announce. Ultimately Scan 3D never shipped and it was the only experience in the 3DFE initiative that didn’t reach the public.

3DFE Central Design

My role on the central team was to support our Organization’s Creative Director in org wide initiatives, strategy, and storytelling. I was part of multiple strike teams around cross org initiatives and became a contact point for creatives across our different products to reach out to for guidance and support.

This role often included collaborating with our Marketing team to help position our offerings. I traveled and oversaw how we were represented at multiple events including Microsoft Build, Ready, Inspire, and the Augmented World Expo.

We also had a large story in the Microsoft EDU Keynote in Spring of 2017. Again, for this event I was the script writer but took on an even larger role doing all of the production and demo prototyping to create our narrative.

I presented our product and story to the Microsoft Leadership Team during rehearsals and fielded questions and feedback. You can see our final demo in the section of the event below starting at 53 minutes in.
